Mahtomedi was founded in the mid 1880s as a Methodist summer colony. Located on the east side of White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi naturally became a desirable location for summer homes and resorts. Train riders came from St. Paul to escape the heat and enjoy Mahtomedi's attractions, including Wildwood Amusement Park. Today, Mahtomedi boasts about 6000 residents in its 3 square miles.
Grant is one of Minnesota's newest cities. Located just east of Mahtomedi and west of Stillwater, much of Grant is dotted with hobby farms and working farms over its 17,000 acres. About 4000 people live in Grant today.
Mahtomedi School District #832 serves Dellwood, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs, Willernie and parts of Grant, Hugo, Lake
Elmo, Oakdale and White Bear Lake. There are two elementary schools, one middle school and a senior high.
Parts of Grant are served by Stillwater Area School District #834 .
Residents of Mahtomedi have access to one of the most recognized landmarks in the northeastern Twin Cities: the Gateway Trail. The trail leads all the way from St. Paul to about 4 miles north of Stillwater, and passes through Oakdale, Pine Springs and just touches Mahtomedi.
Other parks in Mahtomedi and Grant offer picnic facilities, swimming beaches, outdoor skating rinks, ball fields, trails and open space. White Bear Lake is large and deep enough to allow water skiing, boating, canoeing, sailing, fishing and swimming in the warmer months, and cross country skiing, ice skating, ice fishing and ice boating in the winter months.
Many of the homes in the city of Grant are located on the rolling acreages of hobby farms, horse farms or agricultural farms. Mahtomedi offers more variety - including townhomes, condominiums and newer residential developments centered around small parks. There are also many homes located on the shores of White Bear Lake.
